    STIHL ElastoStart™
The ElastoStart™ starter handle is an exclusive feature of STIHL. It is a starting grip with a built-in shock absorber that helps reduce the effort when pulling on the starter cord. The ElastoStart™ starter grip noticeably reduces the sudden peak forces (compression) normally felt during cranking. The forces which occur at the grip after the first compression stroke are smoothed out.

    IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor
The IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor is designed to automatically adjust the air/fuel ratio when the air filter becomes restricted or partially clogged and maintains the engine’s correct RPM. IntelliCarb™ uses air from the clean side of the air filter to control the diaphragm and flow of fuel. As the air filter becomes dirty and less air is available for the carburetor, the IntelliCarb™ system adjusts the fuel flow to compensate for the decrease in air flow. This is in contrast to typical carburetors that utilize this air from the “dirty” side of the air box.

    Side-Access Chain Tensioner
The side-access chain tensioner makes it much more convenient for the user to adjust the saw chain with a bar wrench as opposed to the typical location of the guide bar adjustment screw.
  • Zoom
Toolless fuel and oil caps with retainers
Simply lift the lever and twist the caps to remove or tighten. There‘s no need to use a tool to tighten or loosen.

    Decompression Valve
The decompression valve, also referred to as 'deco' or 'deco valve', vents compression in the cylinder for easier starting. The decompression valve temporarily reduces the compression in the combustion chamber during cranking and helps reduce the effort needed to pull the starter rope. It is opened manually and closes automatically as soon as the engine fires.

Reduced-Emission Engine Technology - Caring for Nature
The STIHL Inc. “Caring for Nature” seal identifies its powered products that are more environmentally conscious, producing zero or low exhaust emissions. STIHL Inc. defines “low exhaust emissions” as being cleaner than EPA and/or CARB exhaust emission standards.

MS 461 is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 121.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A REAL HANDFUL OF SAW!!! I have purchased other big box brands and decided 5yrs ago it was time for a REAL saw, I purchased a ms 271/18" bar, works excellent, needed longer bar so my dealer recommended an ms461, it came with a 20" bar I also purchased a 25" bar. First time out was a 28" hickory....wow, next up a 42" elm..again wow. The power of this saw commands your respect, not for the inexperienced user, im a big guy 275# and this saw has put me in my place more than once, and I love it,I use both saws weekly. As far as cold starting...1.Stihl oil, non-ethanol premium gas, 2. Full choke until it pops, then one click up and it will start every time. I heat with wood, burn 7-8 cord a year, I depend on my Stihl saws,

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great saw I have had an MS290 for about 8 years now for firewood and I just bought this for the bigger trees. The weight and balance is perfect with a 25 inch bar, but I got a 32 as well for the big stuff. The power is amazing, anti vibe works great. Decompression valve is nice for starting when the saw is hot. Elastostart works really well too especially when I don’t use the decompression valve.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Real Deal, Not for Kids Put my 361 20" on a 30" black birch and it slowly made it through, but when the smoke started had to call time out. Price tag (as usual) was a gasp, but when I got back with the 461 28" and laid into it, my neighbor was the one gasping as I cut a 20 footer into stove length in under ten minutes. Read the other reviews, if you are used to a homeowner level saw this baby will have some surprises for you but wear your chaps and it's all good

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great p/w ratio. This saw made short work of a 16" base red oak. My 50cc saws could have done it but nowhere near as quick as this saw. A little hard to start the first time out but after a few start/stop cycles fired right up first couple of pulls. If you need a saw that turns big jobs into little jobs look no further, buy this saw!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from another stihl i should not have bought I needed a 36" saw for hurricane cleanup in south Florida. the only thing available the day after the storm was a MS461. I had to purchase the saw with a 25" bar and chain, and then buy the 36" bar and chain separate. I installed 36, ran it for a minute, then tightened the chain. The next day on the job it needed to make four cuts, that's all. It took us 20 minutes to get it started, same as the last handful of stihl's I bought and threw away the first day. It cut great and had a lot more power than I expected. The next job it had to make five cuts. Of course the chain came off after two cuts and took forever to restart. The next job was a repeat, hard to start and chain comes off. These big saws need a manual oiler. This is the last stihl I will ever buy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Powerful Enough for 100 Year Old Red Oak I had a large Red Oak tree fall, and I figured the cost of getting it cut and hauled off would be roughly the cost of this saw, so I bought one with a 20" and 28" bar and chain. Next year had another Red Oak 108 years old fall. The 28" cut very well. Both trees cut up, and now I am cutting up two large Pecan trees. I had an issue with the saw starting initially, so I changed the spark plug out and problem solved. I've had to replace both the oil and gas caps--not what you'd expect on a saw just a few years old--but they are not expensive. I sharpen the saw myself, and some wood dulls the chain worse than others. Oak is much worse than Pecan or Pine. Also, cutting large vines will tend to stretch the chain more.Anyone who has been around saws knows that a hard-to-start saw is very frustrating. I am over 60, and I've known a few. MS 461 Starting is a breeze. I put the lever to FULL (cold start)choke, pull a few times until the saw almost starts, then switch over to RUN. The decompression valve helps starting also. My saw weighs 20lbs with fuel and the 20" bar, and with the normal reaching, the lower back gets a workout. I am planning on getting a smaller, lighter weight Stihl saw for cutting limbs and smaller trees. It is a good practice too having an extra saw in case your saw gets in a bind and the blade is stuck. I use this saw as needed on limbs and large trees. It performs very well.
